Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

His flawless previous daily phone, which the 13 Pro Max improves on mainly in battery and brightness.

He calls it the most reliably fluid smartphone experience he has had, lagging only once in almost a year of daily use.

His daily phone, with a phenomenal camera, though he wants sharper-edge changes, USB-C, bigger battery and more customisation.

His daily phone: supremely reliable with great battery and tough enough to use caseless, but uncomfortable and no high refresh rate.

Previously beaten by the S21 Ultra in his camera comparison, though still the best for video.

Mentioned as the phone the Find X3 Pro's camera design resembles, and as uncomfortable to hold by comparison.

Amazing battery life in daily use, but the result shows Apple did not improve battery life this year.

Wins on night mode, low-light video and portraits with a simple, polished camera, but loses on zoom, macro and overall versatility.

Used as a contrast, with its sharp sides taken to the extreme, which he likes less than the S21 Ultra's feel.

Mentioned alongside the Note 20 Ultra as having an A-plus camera, slightly better than the Mi 11.

Reliable, polished and surprisingly durable, with great cameras and speakers, though he misses a 120Hz display and Android-style customisation.

Used as a familiar reference phone, notably for a responsiveness comparison against an old Nexus 5.

Mentioned as Apple's most expensive iPhone yet, though now out-priced by rival phones.

Joint best money-no-object phone, cheaper than the Note 20 Ultra, with a big jump over the regular 12.

Finished last in the battery test with smaller capacity than last year's model, but 7 hours is still exceptional and he rates it the better phone overall.

Best phone video camera, with excellent portraits and improving night mode, and almost as good as the Note 20 Ultra for photos.

Worth buying, with a much better camera, battery and screen than the 12 Pro for only a small price jump.

Not yet tested, but he expects its bigger sensor and better stabilisation to be Apple's true next-generation camera, and suggests waiting for it.

The only iPhone 12 with a real camera upgrade, effectively an iPhone 12 Ultra, though missing 120Hz hurts.
