Apple iPhone XS Max

Came last at 5 hours 48 minutes, which is enough to get through a day but clearly behind the rest.

Reliable, consistent video and a strong portrait mode, but it has fewer features and is the weakest in low light, so it finished last.

Still the best Apple has to offer for those invested in the ecosystem, and about to improve with iOS 13.

Finished last, a decent time for its battery size, but he wants Apple to increase capacity.

The better buy than the XS if you can cope with its size, thanks to a bigger screen and 10 to 15 percent more battery life.

Lasted just under six hours, which he is pretty happy with, but it was beaten by the P30 and others.

Most accurate colours, unbeaten HDR and best natural portrait blur, but behind on night, zoom, macro and slow motion.

Handles the rig well and keeps up in low light, but heavy colour processing causes odd background blur.

Best for gaming and storage speed and strong in Geekbench, but slowest at social media loading.

Most consistent camera of the three, with the best dynamic range, natural portraits and flash, though its night shots can be soft.

Lasted 6 hours 11 minutes, last place, but he thinks that is decent given its small battery and big, high-resolution display.

Secure Face ID, strong audio and longer software support, but bulkier, slower to charge and more expensive than the S10 Plus.

Impressive cameras and surprisingly good battery life, but he is annoyed by the slow charger in the box.

Pushes the most pixels over the largest area yet still lasted about 6 hours 56, helped by the efficient iOS 12 and A12 Bionic.

Charging with the in-box 5W charger is appalling at over three hours, though a fast charger brings it to a respectable 1 hour 50.

Consistent colour and good highlight control, but a beauty-filter look, more noise in dark areas and portrait mode that loses focus on the body.

Lasted longest in the test thanks to its efficient chip and iOS 12, despite a smaller battery.

Named in the comparison alongside the XS, but he does not judge it separately.

Won the battery test, though by less than its much larger battery suggested.

The 6.5 inch OLED iPhone is the one he is most looking forward to, thanks to big hands and video watching.
